On March 1, 2018, Carlie Houchen, M.P.H., KHI analyst, provided information on the results of Kansas Health Institute’s health impact assessment – or HIA – on the issue of municipal water reuse in Kansas to the House Water and Environment Committee.

KHI’s study assessed how the implementation of municipal water reuse projects in Kansas could affect water availability and community sustainability, water quality, community perception of water quality, consumption of beverages other than municipal tap water, cost and utility rates, guidance and regulation of water reuse and associated health outcomes.

Primary impacts studied in the report include communities’ perception of the quality of reused water, current technology available to process water reuse, costs related to type of reuse and regulations as more communities pursue water reuse options.
