KHI Website

Find the Kansas health policy content you need. Check out our services.

We’re excited to finally be able to share our new website with you.

It should come as no surprise that our primary goal with the website redesign project is to improve the user experience at khi.org. To accomplish this, we’re working to make our content more engaging and accessible. We hope you will continue coming back to the website for KHI’s research and analysis as well as take the time to learn more about the services we offer. Here’s an overview of what you’ll find on the new website.

Fewer clicks, easier scrolling on publications

We’ve designed a simpler process for accessing our health policy content. The leading example is the way we’re now publishing our issue briefs and fact sheets: These publications can now be read directly from the web page, instead of only having the PDF download option. Going forward, we will still design a PDF version for many of our publications, especially those lengthier technical reports, but it will be determined based on the objectives for a particular project. Additionally, the new website has sections for featured content and videos on each topic page to highlight what’s most timely and relevant.

Streamlined searching with the most frequently used topics & tags

The new site was built with a more robust and intuitive search functionality, along with a new set of topics and tags to generate better keyword search results. In proper KHI fashion, we analyzed the body of work posted at khi.org to identify the most frequent topics we’ve covered in our research and convening projects, and from that information, we established a set of approximately 50 topics — or tags — to use when cataloging our online content. All tags roll up into six main topics to showcase our work by relevant health policy areas:

You can Build Your KHI Reading List with these search filters:

In addition to improving the way you interact with our policy and research content, this website redesign project also gave us an opportunity to create space to showcase our services.

You may be asking: How can KHI help my organization or my grant program achieve its objectives? Then, you may find what you’re looking for in our Services section. Many clients have come to rely on KHI’s expertise, objectivity and results-oriented approach to achieve their goals. The new website has a section describing our services, including our related expertise and sample projects:

Other favorite features

KHI staff are committed to making sure that, whether you’re visiting us at khi.org or in person at the KHI Learning Center, you’re finding what you need to support effective policymaking and community conversations. At the new khi.org, these are some of the favorite features noted by our staff:

  • Sleek design and layout with thumbnail images for each article
  • Read Time posted next to the article, which calculates how long it may take to read the article so you can decide whether you want to make the time to read it now or bookmark it for later
  • An integrated “share article” component making it a breeze to share via email and social media
  • Room to include more data visualization such as Tableau charts and other interactive features – stay tuned!

Website accessibility

The website redesign project gave us an opportunity to assess where we are and where we want to be with the digital accessibility of our content. While we have guideposts through the recommendations of the Web Content Accessibility Guidance (WCAG) and standards within Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, KHI’s objectives with accessibility go beyond these specifications. Digital accessibility is integral to carrying out our mission. We recognize that meeting our internally established goals will be a marathon and not a sprint. With over 2,000 PDF documents in our online portfolio, we were able to reproduce much of that content in HTML format for improved accessibility, particularly for members of our audience using assistive technology. And we’re dedicated to re-uploading all of our video files to add closed captioning. Thank you for your patience as we advance in this important area.

Thank you to our web developers

To carry out this extensive web design project, we partnered with Overland Park-based web development firm, Lifted Logic. Their team spent valuable time getting to know our mission, products and services in order to design and build a site that would help us meet the needs of KHI’s audience.

The entire KHI team was a joy to work with! Their passion for serving their fellow Kansans and incredible breadth of knowledge was evident from start to finish. For expertise in health policy and for guidance along your journey to a healthier Kansas, look no further than Kansas Health Institute! – Todd Smidt, project manager at Lifted Logic.
