In the United States, tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable disease, disability and death. Youth tobacco product use especially has negative health consequences including addiction and lifelong chronic disease. Early use of tobacco products is a major factor in developing and sustaining addiction because the adolescent brain is still in development and is uniquely vulnerable to nicotine and its reinforcing effects.
The Kansas Health Institute and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment worked together on a report and infographic describing the landscape of tobacco retail licensing and zoning in Kansas and policies that Kansas communities could consider adopting to curb youth access to tobacco products.
