BIO: Schwartz was born May 26, 1951. She grew up in Lyndon. She graduated from Baker University with a bachelor’s degree in business management.
She has been the executive director of the association since August 2004.
“It’s the best job I’ve had,” said Schwartz. “They’re the hardest working professionals that I’ve been around.”
KPHA is an association of public health professionals. It brings together researchers, practitioners, inspectors and health advocates, Schwartz said.
Her current work includes writing a strategic plan to improve Kansas’ standing on the top 10 essential public health services. She is also working on an orientation manual for public health.
“We are developing a common language in public health,” said Schwartz about the manual.
Schwartz is responsible for working on and staffing the numerous KPHA projects.
Additionally, KPHA encourages health advocacy during legislative sessions.
“We really want to be more successful in collecting testimony for legislation,” she said.
Before joining KPHA, Schwartz worked for the Kansas Department on Aging for four years as the director of information and community resources. Prior to that, she was with the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services for six years. From 1986 to 1994, Schwartz served in the Kansas House of Representatives. She served four years as a Republican and four years as a Democrat. Schwartz was also a nursing home administrator for 14 years.
She is married to Howard Schwartz, the Kansas Judicial Administrator. They have four children and seven grandchildren.
INTERCONNECTS: Schwartz is a member of the American Association of University Women. She is a Kansas Public Health Leadership Institute fellow and a member of Temple Beth Sholom.
