Radio stations across Kansas next week will begin airing commercials designed to let people know they can buy health insurance on the federal marketplace if they’ve experienced a life-altering event within the past 60 days.
Life-altering events include marriage, divorce, death of a spouse, birth of a child, job loss, retirement and moving from one community to another.
“We’re just trying to let people know they may not have to wait until the next open enrollment period, and they may qualify for a tax credit,” said Katrina McGivern, communications coordinator at the Kansas Association for the Medically Underserved.
KAMU is administering a federal grant on behalf of a consortium that includes the Kansas Hospital Association, Kansas Association of Local Health Departments, Association of Community Mental Health Centers of Kansas, Kansas Area Agencies on Aging Association and Kansas Insurance Department.
The 30-second commercials, due to run through June on 66 Kansas radio stations, are expected to cost about $13,000.
The enrollment campaign has adopted the name Cover Kansas.
Initial enrollment in the health insurance marketplace closed March 31 and is scheduled to reopen on Nov. 15.
“But if someone has experienced a life-altering event, they may be eligible for a special enrollment period,” McGivern said. “To find out if they are, they should either go to the website, www.HealthCare.gov, or they can contact a navigator and they’ll help them.”
“We’ll get them pointed in the right direction,” McGivern said.
More than 57,000 Kansans signed up for health insurance during the initial enrollment period.
According to a recent U.S. Department of Health and Human Services report, 55 percent of the Kansas enrollees were women, 46 percent were between ages 45 and 64, 60 percent signed up for one of the so-called silver plans and 79 percent were eligible for financial assistance.
