Top Kansas University officials were at the Statehouse today to award Senate President Susan Wagle with the 2013 KU Cancer Center Leadership Award.
KU officials said Wagle received the award for "her longstanding support for cancer research, therapies and prevention."
Wagle, a Wichita Republican and the state's first female Senate president, is a cancer survivor who recently underwent chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Presenting the award were KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-LIttle and Dr. Roy Jensen, director of the KU Cancer Center, which is located at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City.
“Senator Wagle is an exceptional role model for the many fellow Kansans who are struggling with cancer,” Jensen said. “She has battled the disease and continues to win. Her tenacity for fighting against cancer is inspirational. We are proud of her victories – both in her personal health and that of her family’s – and those she’s waged for other cancer patients in championing various public policy measures. It is an honor to recognize such an accomplished policymaker.”
KU officials are seeking legislative approval of state funding support for a planned building expansion at the KU medical school.
Gov. Sam Brownback included the requested financial assistance in the budget recommendations he gave the Legislature in January.
KU officials said no one received the cancer center leadership award in 2012, though it wasn't immediately known whether Wagle was the award's first recipient.
The KU Cancer Center received designation as a National Cancer Institute in June 2012.
