Appointments made to nurse and doctor licensing boards

Gov. Sam Brownback today named people to fill two of three vacancies on the state nursing board and also named two people to the Kansas Board of Healing Arts, the agency that licenses physicians and many other health-care professionals.

Appointed to the Kansas State Board of Nursing were:

· JoAnn Klaassen of Olathe, a nurse for more than 30 years, and currently a clinical instructor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and director of the university's RN-BSN Rural Nurse Initiative. According to the Governor's Office she also is a licensed attorney in Missouri and Kansas. She received her law degree at UMKC.

· Jeanne Catanzaro of Topeka, an assistant professor of nursing at Washburn University. She earned her master's in nursing from UMKC and is a licensed nurse in Kansas and Missouri.

The board has seats for 11 members and now will have 10 of them filled.

Named to the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts were:

· Dr. Garold Minns of Bel Aire. Minns is a professor and a program director at the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita. He earned his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed his residency at KU's Wichita campus. He was re-appointed for a four-year term.

· Dr. David Laha of Overland Park has practiced podiatric medicine and surgery in the Kansas City area since 1985. He earned his doctorate from the California College of Podiatric Medicine and completed his surgical residency at Hayward Vespers Hospital in California.
