KanCare is Gov. Sam Brownback’s plan to move virtually all of the 380,000 Kansas Medicaid enrollees into managed care plans with three private companies. Pending required federal approvals, KanCare is set to launch Jan. 1, 2013.

This fact sheet provides information about the three companies known as managed care organizations, or MCOs. It also outlines how the state will evaluate the MCOs’ financial performance and lists some of the value-added benefits the MCOs plan to offer.

Kansas expects to spend about $3.2 billion on Medicaid services in 2013. Brownback officials say KanCare will save the state and federal governments $1 billion over five years while improving Medicaid services.
