KANSAS CITY, Kan. A Salina-based oncologist has been named director for the University of Kansas School of Medicine expansion in Salina, KU officials announced Friday.
Dr. William Cathcart-Rake will oversee the program which works to prepare new doctors for practice in rural areas.
The Smoky Hill Family Residency Program has been training four or five doctors a year but is expected to expand to eight, KU officials said.
The plan is to begin offering four years of medical training in Salina beginning in 2011 or 2012 contingent on receiving funding for the program and sign-off from national accreditors.
Students will be specifically recruited to complete all four years of medical training in Salina.
Cathcart-Rake is a 1974 graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine. In 1977, he completed residency at KU Medical Center in Internal Medicine and in 1979, a fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology.
Since 2003, he has served as medical director of the Tammy Walker Cancer Center in Salina and attending staff physician at the Salina Regional Health Center. He also runs a private practice.
He has been a volunteer faculty member at the KU School of Medicine for more than 30 years.
“We are extremely excited to have a physician of Dr. Cathcart-Rake’s caliber to head our new Salina program,” said Dr. Heidi Chumley, senior associate dean for medical education at KU Medical Center.
