Dr. David Helms, a leading national health policy expert and facilitator of high-level policy discussions, became the director of LMI’s Center for Health Reform in January, 2011. The Center is providing government and community leaders with strategic analysis and direction for the implementation and administration of federal and state health reforms. From 2000 until 2011, Dr. Helms was president of AcademyHealth — the national society for the fields of health services research and health policy analysis. Dr. Helms’ career has focused on advancing health care improvements through planning, program analysis and development of new initiatives to expand coverage for the uninsured. He is frequently invited to facilitate consensus processes on health policy issues and on the development of research agendas. Dr. Helms teaches a course on state health care policy at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Department of Health Policy and Management.
He received his Ph.D. in public administration and economics from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University and his bachelor’s degree in political science from Colorado College.
